Property Crime Repeat Offender, Robert McGuffin, was sentenced to 8 years in prison last week on Forgery and two Larceny charges. McGuffin’s charges faced enhanced penalties due to his lengthy prior record of property crimes.
Assistant Solicitor Melanie Graham handled the prosecution of this case for the Solicitor’s Office. She commented that “when you know better you do better. This is a Defendant whose history shows he’s had multiple times to learn how to do better but has failed to do so.” She further expressed that we must “show the victims in this case that we are vested in protecting the community from future criminal acts by McGuffin.”
Earlier this year, McGuffin presented and passed a stolen and forged check in the amount of $2,500 resulting in a forgery charge. About a month later, McGuffin stole a trailer from Extra Space Storage on St. Andrews Road in Lexington County. The trailer was valued at $3,500 and a laddervator inside the trailer was valued at $1,800. The Defendant placed the items up for sale on Facebook. Based upon this post, law enforcement was able to recover the trailer, but the laddervator was not recovered. McGuffin also stole four rims and tires. We are thankful for Detective Joshua Skeen of the Lexington County Sheriff's Department for his work on these cases.
The theft of trailers is a constant problem in Lexington County. For many of our residents, the theft of their trailers disrupts their livelihoods and creates financial hardships. Law enforcement does all they can to recover stolen property, and a sentence like this one sends a clear message that these property crimes will not be tolerated.
