Denzell Labrew, a 23 year old man from West Columbia, pled guilty today to Armed Robbery and two counts of Burglary Second Degree - Violent. The Honorable Eugene C. Griffith, Jr., sentenced Labrew, who had no prior record, to twenty (20) years for the Armed Robbery and fifteen (15) years for both of the Burglary charges. The sentences are to run concurrently. Labrew will not be eligible for parole.
Eleventh Circuit Solicitor Rick Hubbard said, “This man was a danger to our community. The citizens of Lexington County that were victimized received justice today.” Senior Assistant Solicitor Angela Garrick Martin prosecuted this matter for the Eleventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office and asked the sentencing judge for a substantial prison sentence.
In December of 2017, a few days before Christmas, in the Ashburton Lane area of West Columbia, Labrew broke into several motor vehicles and then used garage door openers to gain access to several homes during the nighttime hours. He stole cash, electronics, and jewelry while homeowners slept. In two of these residences, Labrew was confronted by homeowners and children, who chased him out. Video surveillance in one home actually helped with identifying Labrew.
On January 4, 2018, Labrew went into the Wells Fargo Bank located on St. Andrews Road, presented a knife to the tellers demanding money while making threats. Labrew jumped over the bank counter and collected money himself prior to running away from the area. This was captured on video surveillance. Labrew was stopped later in Chester County by the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) and resisted arrest. Upon his return to Lexington County, he was interviewed by investigators with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and confessed to most of his crimes.
